2024 NEWS

  • November 16, 2024. Congratulations to Yi-Hsiang Kuo (郭宜翔) on winning the 1-st place award in Student Paper Competition at the 2024 Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers Conference. Yi-Hsiang's paper presents a data-driven method for modeling non-smooth damping characteristics.

  •  November 1, 2024. The NSDL paper "Method for Constructing a Compact Component Mode Synthesis Model for Analyzing Nonlinear Normal Modes of Structures with Localized Nonlinearities" has been accepted by the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics.

  • October 22, 2024. The NSDL paper "Efficient Cyclic Modeling and Resonance Analysis of Umbrella-Shaped Satellite Structures" has been published in the AIAA Journal.

  • ​October 21, 2024. Dr. Tien receives the ASPEED Young Scholar Award (信驊青年學者).

  • September 6, 2024. Prof. Herman Shen (University of North Texas) visits NSDL.

  • August 28, 2024. Congratulations to Xuan-Hong Chen (陳宣宏) on winning the 1-st place award in Student Paper Competition at ASME IDETC 2024 Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise. Xuan-Hong's paper presents an efficient reduced-order modeling method for nonlinear normal mode analysis.

  • July 11, 2024. Congratulations to Chung-Yi Fan (范仲儀) and Chin-Yi Chang (張縉譯) on being admitted to the Ph.D. program.

  • July 5, 2024. MS student Hsiang-Li Wu's paper, "Analyzing the Vibration Modes of Umbrella-Shaped Satellite Using Cyclic Expansion Method", was awarded the Best Conference Paper Award - 1st Place at the 2024 CSSV National Conference on Sound and Vibration. This paper is based on collaborative work between NSDL and the Industrial Technology Research Institute.

  • June 28, 2024. Congratulations to Xuan-Hong Chen (陳宣宏) and Hsiang-Li Wu (吳祥立) for successfully defending their MS theses. 

  • June 18, 2024. Mohd Zakariya (from Jamia Millia Islamia) joins NSDL as a summer visiting student.

  • May 31, 2024. Dr. Tien attends the annual meeting of the ASME Technical Committee of Vibration and Sound at Rice University.

  • May 15, 2024. The NSDL paper "A Hybrid Continuation Framework for Analyzing Nonlinear Normal Modes of Systems With Contact Nonlinearity" has appeared in the ASME Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics.

  • April 24-26, 2024. Dr. Tien is invited to give a speech at 2024 International Conference of Applied Nonlinear Dynamics of Multi-Scale Systems held at the University of Michigan.

  • March 29, 2024. Dr. Tien receives the Outstanding Teaching Award from the College of Engineering of NTHU (清華工學院傑出教學獎).

  • March 14, 2024. Prof. Kiran D'Souza (Ohio State) visits NSDL.

  • January 29, 2024. Dr. Tien hosts Prof. Pongton Prombut and a group of students from Kasetsart University during their visit at NTHU.

  • December 11, 2023. Dr. Tien gives a seminar presentation "Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures: Challenges and Opportunities" at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University.

  • November 3, 2023. Dr. Tien delivers the presentation "Analytical and Hybrid Approaches for Analyzing and Controlling the Dynamics of Piecewise-Linear Systems" at ASME TCVS seminar series.

  • October 18, 2023. Dr. Tien gives a seminar presentation at the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering at National Formosa University.

  • September 7, 2023. The NSDL paper "Analyzing the backbone curve of piecewise-linear non-smooth systems using a generalized bilinear frequency approximation method" has been accepted for publication in the journal Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing.

  • September 6, 2023. Dr. Tien receives Young Faculty Research Award from NTHU (清華大學新進人員研究獎).

  • August 20-23, 2023. Dr. Tien and Shih-Chun Huan present at 2023 ASME IDETC VIB and MSNDC conferences.

  • July 25, 2023. Congratulations to Hao-Wen Chen (陳浩文), Shih-Chun Huang (黃世鈞), and Chun-An Chen (陳傳安) for successfully defending their MS theses. 

  • June 17, 2023. Chuan-An Chen received the 3rd place Best Paper Award from the 2023 National Conference on Sound and Vibration. Chuan-An's paper presents a nonlinear design for enabling wideband vibration energy harvesting in bidirectional frequency sweeps.

  • June 6, 2023. Dr. Tien elected as a member of ASME Technical Committee on Vibration and Sound.

  • May 30, 2023. Dr. Matt Allen (Brigham Young) visits NSDL.

  • May 4, 2023. Dr. Tien receives Young Faculty Research Award from College of Engineering of NTHU (工學院新進人員研究獎).

  • February 21, 2023. The NSDL paper "Efficient Hybrid Symbolic-Numeric Computational Method for Piecewise Linear Systems With Coulomb Friction" has been accepted for publication in the ASME Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics. This is a joint work between the NSDL and the NDVL at The Ohio State University.

  • February 4, 2023. The NSDL paper "Predicting Nonlinear Modal Properties by Measuring Free Vibration Responses" has been accepted for publication in the ASME Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics.

  • February 1, 2023. The NSDL paper "Poincare maps: a modern systematic approach toward obtaining effective sections" has appeared in the journal Nonlinear Dynamics. This is a joint work between the NSDL and the NDVL at The Ohio State University.

  • January 31, 2023. Prof. Tien received Excellent Lecturer from College of Engineering for 2021 academic year (110學年度工學院教學優良教師).

  • January 14, 2023. The NSDL paper "Parametric Analysis of the Nonlinear Dynamics of a Cracked Cantilever Beam" has been accepted for publication in the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics

  • January 11, 2023. Congratulations to Chia-Ling Hsu (徐佳伶) for successfully defending her MS thesis. 

2022 NEWS

  • September 2, 2022. Dr. Tien gives a seminar presentation at the CTAM Forum of Structural Dynamics and Wave Propagation. The talk is about the analysis and exploitation of nonlinear dynamics for industrial applications.

  • August 14-17, 2022. MS student Chia-Ling Hsu (徐佳伶) wins the 1-st place award in Student Paper Competition at 2022 ASME Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise (VIB conference at IDETC). Chia-Ling's paper focuses on investigating the nonlinear dynamics of cracked structures (link to the paper). 

  • August 14-17, 2022. Chia-Ling Hsu (徐佳伶) , Shih-Chun Huang (黃世鈞), and Dr. Tien attend the 2022 ASME IDETC to give two talks on the topics of nonlinear modeling and system identification. The team also meets with the OSU NDVL and former advisor Kiran D'Souza. See the album.

  • July 20, 2022. NSDL welcomes new graduate students Huan-Yi Jhu (朱桓儀), Chin-Lun Chen (陳晉掄), Xuan-Hong Chen (陳宣宏), and Hsiang-Li Wu (吳祥立) to join the group. They are starting their master's degree program this coming Fall semester.

  • June 20, 2022. MS student Chia-Ling Hsu (徐佳伶) receives Honorable Mention Best Conference Paper Award at 2022 Chinese Society of Sound and Vibration Conference. Chia-Ling will present her research on nonlinear modeling of cracked structures at this virtual conference (https://sites.google.com/view/cssv2022).

  • March 30, 2022. The NSDL paper "Efficient Analysis of Stationary Dynamics of Piecewise-Linear Nonlinear Systems Modeled Using General State-Space Representations" has been accepted for publication in the ASME Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics. This paper is based on a collaborative work with NDVL at The Ohio State University.

2021 NEWS

  • August 17, 2021. A research team of NDVL at Ohio State and NSDL at NTHU wins the 2-nd place award in Student Paper Competition at 2021 ASME MSNDC conference (link to news).

  • August 17, 2021. NSDL attends the 2021 ASME IDETC to present a OSU-NTHU collaborative work on the Coulomb friction system modeling. The conference was hosted as a virtual event this year. Dr. Tien also co-chairs the session Rotating Systems and Rotor Dynamics in the conference.

  • March 30, 2021. Graduate Research Associate Chia-Yi Chung (鍾嘉益) is admitted to the Delft University of Technology. Chia-Yi joined NSDL as a short-term researcher working on developing efficient algorithms for nonlinear dynamical systems. In this fall, he will pursue a master's degree in mechanical engineering at TU Delft.

  • February 18, 2021. NSDL attends the NODYCON 2021, The Second International Nonlinear Dynamics Conference, to present research on the development of new computational methods for analyzing piecewise-linear non-smooth systems. The conference was originally planned to be held in Rome, but is eventually hosted as a virtual conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Tien presented one conference publication in this conference.

2020 NEWS

  • December 15, 2020. Dr. Tien presents his research to international students of college of engineering. The talk covers his research works at OSU and NTHU.

  • August 1, 2020. Nonlinear & Structural Dynamics Lab (NSDL) established.
